America’s Goldilocks Syndrome for Teen Pop Stars: When Is It Just Right? Part 2

As far as Miley and Selena go, I totally agree with my co-blogger. They are both adults now and however they want to market themselves is up to them. If parents really have an issue with their young daughters admiring the "new" Miley, then that's an issue they need to work out with their own children. Yes these young ladies are role models, but let's not forget they are also entertainers. The only reason it's a bigger issue compared to when Britney and Christina first started in the industry is because Miley and Selena are STILL Disney stars while breaking out as young adults. Britney and Christina had at least 4 years separation between their Disney years and their young hollywood careers.

Now, do I think that Taylor Swift is behaving too immature for her age and living like she's in a fairy tale? No. Do I think it's all an act? Partially.

Taylor Swift DOES play victim, not through her songs, but just in her general appearance. She's become one of the biggest stars of our time, and yet puts on this act that she's this little unknown girl from Pennsylvania who can't believe she's winning her umpteenth award. When you win your first couple awards, it's natural to have that overwhelming "OMG I can't believe this is happening to me". But when you've been out in mainstream media for over 3 years, won like over 20 awards, it's time to get over it.

I'm not saying she doesn't deserve any of the awards she has won. Don't get me wrong, I am a Taylor Swift fan. But stop with the pity train! Whether your rich or not, you have millions of fans and supporters and your numerous awards prove it!

The one thing that sticks Taylor above all other celebrities is her own loyalty to her fans. She goes up and beyond in pleasing the people who made her what she is today, including stalking and surprising a fan through the mall just because the little girl was wearing a Taylor Swift shirt. If I were walking down the street wearing a Justin Timberlake shirt, I can guarantee he would turn the other way and run as fast as he can.

Now, her numerous awards also proves she's an amazing singer and knows what she's doing. The fact that the "source" of inspiration for her music is from her relationships shouldn't matter because the girl is still throwing out #1 hits. However, I am personally getting tired of the same sounding songs, and I know there's more this girl can do than writing songs only about her love life, and how some boy broke her heart. If you don't start to change your material Taylor, you're gonna end up like this person...

Don't recognize her? She was the singer in the Boy Meets World episode "Shallow Boy", who only had one hit wonders by slamming Eric, and lost all her fame when she no longer had any guy to be the "inspiration" to her guy slamming songs.

America’s Goldilocks Syndrome for Teen Pop Stars: When Is It Just Right?

America’s Goldilocks Syndrome for Teen Pop Stars:  When Is It Just Right?

Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez – these names are breathed by millions of teenage fans across the country, and perhaps the world.  Teens and tweens use them as role models, figures to aspire to be, but some view them as overly provocative, inappropriate, boring, or disappointments.

It is now clear that America has a double standard in the American music industry, especially aimed at teenage pop stars.  No one is good enough for children to look up to.  No is ever just right.  It is argued that some of these stars act too young or bland for their age, while others behave too old or provocatively.  Is there a happy medium?  Not to sound cliché, but in the late Aaliyah’s words, “Age ain’t nothing but a number”, an album she released that went on to sell three million copies in the US alone when she was only 14 years old.

Getting back to the stars of today, Taylor Swift has sold millions of records and won numerous Grammy awards in the short amount of time she’s been in the music scene.  She writes her own songs, plays her own guitar, and tells emotional tales of personal heartache that can be related to by listeners of all ages.  She chronicles her passage of wanting to find Prince Charming, a Romeo to her Juliet, having a crush, a first date, and being in love.  Instead of focusing on the accomplishments of this only 21 year old, people focus on her being “too old” to still believe in fairy tales, for being too wrapped up in heartbreak, for being too emotional, for always playing the victim.  These are her songs and her experiences, let her sing in what she believes.  That’s what makes her songs honest.  As much as people grumble at the fact that Taylor Swift has released yet another heartbreak song, most know they’ve gone through similar events in their life and can relate to the lyrics.

On the other end of the spectrum is seventeen year old Miley Cyrus, who gained immense popularity by starring in Disney Channel's hit series and franchise Hannah Montana.  With a father in the music business and a godmother by the name of Dolly Parton, it was inevitable that Miley would become a mainstream artist.  Starting off on the Disney Channel, Miley was branded with a clean-cut innocent persona, with the likes of six year old girls sporting Hannah Montana t-shirts and blond wigs.  Parents saw Hannah Montana as a great role model for their children to idolize.  What parents may not understand is that Hannah Montana is only a character, not a real person.

The real person is Miley Cyrus, a girl trying to do her best to make a name for herself without carrying the Hannah Montana fame.  By no means is she purposely distancing herself from the character that turned her into a star, but she is only trying to be her own person and set her own standards.  Turning eighteen years old next month, Miley is turning into an adult, responsible for her own choices, and for her own mistakes.  She has some racy lyrics and some provocative dance moves, especially noted in her latest music video “Who Owns My Heart”.  She wears some questionable clothing, but truth be told, she is only trying to find her place in the music scene by doing what she is comfortable doing.  She is often chastised by the media for growing up too fast and for being too sexy, but how is it they want her to act instead?  Do they want her to be Hannah Montana forever, a character developed by a for-profit corporation to boost ratings and sales?

The music scene also has Disney star Selena Gomez, who plays Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place.  Selena Gomez is often labeled as boring and bland in interviews because the media focuses too heavily on appearances.  Like Miley Cyrus, Selena falls into the same age group, having turned 18 this past July.  Unlike Miley, Selena prefers to keep her outfits clean cut.  Yet, her outfits are deemed to be too “grandma” and intended for an older woman.  Ironic, isn’t it?  If she wore outfits that resembled those of Miley Cyrus however, she would be labeled as dressing too sexually.  She keeps herself well-spoken in interviews and remains respectful.  She is the youngest ambassador for UNICEF and her good-natured personality radiates in her interviews.  Instead of looking at her accomplishments, she is automatically labeled as boring and uninteresting because of her appearance and how she presents herself, which society deems as unusual for someone her age.

As I write this and pause to do compulsive Facebook checks, I see a sponsored ad on the right hand side with the title “Is Miley Cyrus too sexy?”  In the early 2000s, the pop scene was abundantly filled with upcoming teen stars, including Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, both Disney child stars.  Both wore inappropriate clothing to award shows, radio interviews, music videos, and other appearances, yet their age was never brought into question, nor was their Disney background.  They were not labeled as too overly sexual for their age, whom at the time, were the same age as Miley Cyrus today.

It is intriguing to note how on the one hand, the world has Taylor Swift, chastised for acting too young for her age, for being too emotional and childish when it comes to relationships, for not being a stronger person.  The world also has Miley Cyrus, chastised for acting too old for her age, for being too provocative.  On some mysterious third hand, we also have Selena Gomez, chastised for being too boring for her age.  None are portrayed as positive influences.  Who is the media and the parents, or anyone for that matter, to judge as to what and how people should behave?  Not every 21 year old will be in the bars every night partying, and not every 17 year old will be wearing their Sunday best every day, and even the ones that are, are questioned as being overly sophisticated.  Those in fact are stereotypes, and when you have artists like Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Selena Gomez not fitting into the molds this society has created for specific age groups, we automatically deem them in a negative light.

Why not embrace celebrities for their accomplishments and for putting themselves out there in the public light?  They may be celebrities, but that’s just their job.  In reality, they are just people living life for the first time, making their own mistakes, learning from the past, and trying to find themselves.  Some artists will act “too old”, some will act “too young”, but at the end, will anyone ever be “just right” for this society?

Music Buzz

The official Whip My Hair video is out! She's so cute, still love the song!

Oh No!

Poor Uma Thurman! I wouldn't know anything about being famous, but I do know it must be embarassing going out in public with a big streak of powder on your face.

FYI- The powder is a result of an old makeup application secret. Sometimes extra residue from the eyeshadow gets and your cheeks and nose, but when you put powder on your face, the residue goes on the powder rather than your skin. You simply brush the powder off and are good to go. In this case, Uma was not.

And Lindsay, don't try to act like that white stuff on your nose is baby powder. You're not fooling anyone with your multiple failed drug tests!

Images came from Google searches...

Seriously?!?

Lindsay Lohan has yet again failed another drug test. Am I really surprised? No not really. This is why..

She's failed what 3-4 drug tests and has never been forced to go back to jail. She gets sent to a rehab clinic that obviously isn't working b/c she's been failing her drug tests while staying there!! Whenever she gets sentenced jail time, she gets out a few days later!

What's worse, you can't really blame her either! She's pretty much made a mockery of the legal system b/c they've let her get away with all her crimes. Plus she has no real support system. Her dad's a fame whore who will throw his own children under the bus to get famous, and her mom is also a fame whore but rather than bashing Lindsay, she'll act as her "friend" rather than her mother.

T.I. broke his probation and you know what happened to him? He got sent to prison for another year! Granted his one year will probably turn to like 2 months and more probation time, but still. They didn't offer him the Betty Ford Clinic to fight his weed addiction. Let's just see what will happen to Lindsay!

Ode to Canada

This is my ode to Canada. I always see all the stereotypes and insults towards Canada, how it's the cap of America, the people talk weird, have weird quirks, but who doesn't! But to be honest, I'm actually starting to become a fan of Canada. It's a pretty country, almost 80% of my favorite actors/actresses come from Canada (like my love Ryan Reynolds), and a lot of good tv shows.

And I love all the characters from How I Met Your Mother in their own ways, but the show wouldn't be the same without it's Canadian, Robin (who actually is from Canada) P.S is there really a Hoser Hut? B/c if there is, I'm there!!!

Here's to you Canada!

Sister Wives... TLC's new winner

I finally got around to catching a few episodes of Sister Wives, TLC’s new cult phenomenon now that Jon and Kate no longer be bringing home the bacon.  I admit, I tried to watch Sister Wives when it first debuted a few weeks ago, but was bored to tears within the first five minutes.  My DVR on the other hand, continued to record all new episodes.  I knew this past Sunday was the Wedding episodes where Kody Brown, already married 3x over with enough kids to start his own league, married Robyn, a woman with kids of her own (who’s the daddy?  I don’t know.. like I said, I only just started watching).

Anyway, I’m hooked!  Robyn got to have the big wedding reception, and decided to include the other wives (in order of marriage: Meri, Janelle, Christine.. unless I got wives 2 and 3 mixed up.  How does Kody keep track??)  Christine felt rejected upon finding out that Kody had a say in what wedding dress Robyn would wear.  “He never cared what dresses we wore.. that hurts”.

Just so many questions come up!

1. So is he only legally married to Meri, with her being the first wife?  In case of an emergency, does Meri have final rights on decisions?

2. Did Meri know when she married Kody that he was a polygamist and wanted multiple wives?  She mentioned that Janelle was present at her wedding.

3. If she didn’t know, how did she feel about it when one day Kody rolls up with another lady.

4. HOW IS THERE NOT MORE JEALOUSY?

5. In my opinion, Kody seems all “HAHA, look at me.. I got 4 wives, I’m living the life!” It was a little odd when Janelle? (Christine? Idk) was helping Kody put on his tie for his wedding with Robyn and then he kissed her.  Kissing another lady on your wedding day…just odd.

6. Let’s get down to business.  How many dependents does Kody claim on his taxes?

7. Do they all work?  What do they do for a living?  How are they able to feed, clothe, and house all these kids?

8. Robyn gets to keep her own house a block away.  Is this for tax purposes?  The other wives are jealous and annoyed that Robyn gets to keep her own house.  Does that mean the other wives want to live on their own too?  Doesn’t that defeat the whole purpose of a marriage?

I’m just fascinated.  And granted that my DVR keeps recording Sister Wives on Sunday nights, I’ll probably continue to watch.  It’s not every day you see a guy on TV dating multiple people… oh wait.

So I just googled Sister Wives to get more information, and I came across this article on MSNBC about how the Brown family is under investigation as it is a 3rd degree felony in Utah to be polygamist.  Per the article, Kody is only legally married to Meri (that answers my first question!) but refers to Janelle, Christine, and Robyn as his "spouses".  I understand why this sort of situation is deemed abnormal, but I don't see how it is against the law.  Legally you're married to one person.  What you do with your time and with who is almost the equivalent as those who have Open Marriages.  Kind of the same thing, isn't it?

This seems definitely like a topic I'd love to delve deeper into.  I mean, to me it seems the biggest obstacle to overcome is not so much the legal issues, but the emotional issues of jealousy and resentment I'm sure these women (or others in similiar situations) will inevitably have.  It's just irrational for you to have a husband with other spouses, sharing your house with you, taking nightly turns as to who gets to sleep with your husband.. having your husband take the other spouses sides over yours.  I mean, those are the real issues.

FASCINATING.

As Mr. MoviePhone would say... "I'M IN!!!!"
